Tibet to Harness Yarlung Zangbo RiverSouthwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region has launched a project to harness the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, the highest river in the world.The project will be carried out over the next 11 years, and includes planting 5.28 million mu (352,000 hectares) of trees and grassland, and the creation of sapling cultivation bases. Legqog, chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Government, said at the project-launching ceremony that the harnessing project is of great significance for helping increase the grain output and income of local farmers and herdsmen, promoting regional economic and social development, and improving the local ecological environment. He urged governments of the project cities and prefectures to mobilize all local people to participate in the project. |
