Work on Draining Landslide-Blocked River in Tibet

Work has begun to dig a ditch to divert water from a blocked river in a bid to reduce losses and damages caused by a large landslide in Yigong Township of Bomi County in Tibet.

Rescue equipment and workers have been deployed by locally stationed military troops. All residents in potential flood areas will be evacuated.

A large landslide followed by mud and rock flows pelted Yigong Township of Bomi County on April 9, destroying seven kilometers of highways, blocking the Yigong River and leaving more than 4,000 residents homeless.

The water level of the river-turned-lake has continued to rise and may flood the local area before June 5, according to a team of engineers sent by the State Flood Control and Relief Headquarters soon after the landslide occurred.

Local governments have been making preparations to rescue flood victims should the flood hit the lower reaches of the river. All residents in nearby townships have been relocated to safe areas.

Large supplies of relief materials such as grain and medicine have been prepared, and more residents may be evacuated.
