Chinese Vice-President Meets Benin Delegation

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao, also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met Wednesday with a women's delegation from Benin headed by first lady Marguerite Assiba Kerekou.

Hu extended a warm welcome to the delegation and said there is a profound traditional friendship between the people of the two countries, and bilateral cooperation in various fields has been fruitful.

He gave high evaluation to the great contributions made by president Kerekou and the Benin government to the development of China-Benin relations, and voiced appreciation for Benin's pursuit of the one China policy, and its support to China on international issues.

The Chinese government and people highly treasure the traditional friendship between the two countries and are willing to work for the establishment of a long-term and stable relationship, he noted.

Mrs. Kerekou said the Chinese people are industrious and courageous, and have made tremendous efforts to alleviate poverty, winning the admiration of the Benin people. She expressed the conviction that, backed by China's experience and assistance, the people of Benin will overcome their difficulties in alleviating poverty.

The delegation is visiting China at the invitation of the All- China Women's Federation.
