China's Foreign Policy Aims at Peace

Visiting Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Li Ruihuan said Tuesday that the goal of China's foreign policy is to strive for peace.

Li made the remarks at a meeting with Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chretien Tuesday afternoon.

"The Chinese people values peace very much and China's development needs peace especially," said Li, who is for a six-day official visit.

Li said over the past 100 years, China has undergone endless wars and turmoil, and that the Chinese people have undertaken hard struggles to strive for independence and liberation, for which they have suffered great losses and sacrifice.

"The Chinese people, who have suffered enough from wars and turmoil, have a special penchant and demand for peace," Li stressed.

"China's development also needs peace especially," he said. "Without peaceful international environment, it will be impossible for us to concentrate on construction and conduct international exchange and cooperation," the Chinese leader added.

"China has no intention of having resentment, contradictions or conflicts with any countries. We hope to establish and develop friendly relations of cooperation with any countries on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence," Li said.

Thus, he stressed, it has been China's long time stance to safeguard world peace firmly, which accords with the realistic need and long-term interest of China itself.

At the same time, Li said, China will not yield an inch on issues concerning national sovereignty and territorial integrity. China holds the point that countries, no matter big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, and regardless of the difference of their social systems, cultural tradition, and concept of value, are equal members of the international community, and that they should enjoy mutual respect, seek common ground and leave aside their differences, treat each other equally and co-exist peacefully, Li elaborated.

Both China and Canada are countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and enjoy great potential in the economic, scientific and technological and cultural cooperation, he said.

The two countries are also among those states of important influence over international affairs and they can play a positive role in establishing and safeguarding a just and reasonable new international order, said Li, adding that China hopes to strengthen exchange and cooperation with Canada and make due contribution to promoting world peace and development.

On his part, Chretien said that it is very important for Canada and China to make concerted efforts to create and safeguard a peaceful and friendly world.
