Kosovo, Inseparable Part of Yugoslavia

The new commander of NATO peacekeepers in Kosovo said Monday that his mission is to implement strictly Security Council resolution 1244, adding that Kosovo is an inseparable part of Yugoslavia.

In an interview with Kosovo TV Monday evening, Spanish General Juan Ortuno said, "Kosovo is part of the indivisible territory of Yugoslavia and any other view on the Kosovo position is unacceptable."

He said the tasks of the NATO-led peacekeeping force are to implement the military and technical agreements signed between NATO and Yugoslavia. Under the agreements, parts of Yugoslav force and Serb police will return to Kosovo.

He also noted that the ethnic Albanian politicians should take the main responsibility for the current serious situation in Kosovo and he appealed to them to make efforts to stop the violence against the non-ethnic Albanians in the province.

Ortuno stressed his force would do its best to improve the atmosphere for the safe return of non-ethnic Albanian refugees.
