"The Road Home" Wins Best Film of 1999 in China

"The Road Home" directed by Zhang Yimou, and nine other films won the official Huabiao Award as China's best films in 1999.

Also known as "My Father and Mother," the Zhang's film also won the Silver Bear Award at the 50th Berlin International Film Festival in February. The movie tells a love story about a village teacher and a peasant girl in China in the late 1950s.

Other best films include blockbusters "The Story of A Pilot," " Lover's Grief over Yellow River".

The best filming technology award went to one of the few Chinese box office champions, "Crash Landing," which used digital technology.

Other film awards including the best children's film, best opera film, best documentary, best cartoon and best sino-foreign co-produced film went respectively to "Happy Dancing," "I Love My Dad," "China in 1949," "Lotus Lantern," and "Shadow Magic". The Hollywood romantic comedy "Notting Hill" won the best dubbed foreign film.

Feng Xiaoning was announced among the best screenwriters for his "Lover's Grief over Yellow River," Chen Guoxing, best director for "The Story of A Pilot," Chen Daoming, best actor for "My 1919" and Jiang Wenli, best actress for "Woman Officer and Man Soldier".

The official China Huabiao Award has been held annually by the Ministry of Radio, Film, and Television since 1979, and is one of the most prestigious in the Chinese movie business, along with the Golden Rooster Award and the Hundred Flowers Award.
