Chinese Vice President Meets Indonesian FM

Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao met with visiting Indonesian Foreign Minister Alwi Shihab at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on May 9.

Hu said China and Indonesia are close neighbors, and there is a traditional friendship between the two peoples. Since the normalization of bilateral ties, cooperation in various fields have produced fruitful results through the efforts of both sides, he noted.

Last year, President Jiang Zemin and President Wahid reached a common understanding to establish and develop a long-term and stable relationship of good-neighborliness, mutual trust, and all- round cooperation, which has defined the future direction of bilateral ties, Hu said.

During Shihab's current visit, the two countries signed a joint statement on the future direction of bilateral cooperation and set up a cooperative committee, further promoting bilateral cooperation, he added.

Hu pointed out that there is broad potential for bilateral cooperation, expressing the hope that both countries will seize the opportunity and push forward cooperation in economic, trade, agricultural, and other sectors so as to stimulate the healthy development of relations.

Hu highly evaluated the emphasis that President Wahid and the Indonesian government put on relations with China. He also expressed appreciation for Indonesia's pursuit of the one-China policy, its position of not having any official contact with Taiwan, and its support of China on the human rights issue. The Chinese government will, as always, support Indonesia's efforts to safeguard national unification and territorial integrity, and to promote national unity and economic development, he stressed.

Shihab said this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Indonesia and China, and bilateral ties are at a historic high at present. Indonesia highly emphasizes its good-neighborliness with China, and hopes to expand cooperation with China in political, trade, investment and other fields, she noted.

She also reiterated that Indonesia steadfastly follows the one- China policy.
