Celebrations Held to Mark Sino-Swedish Relations
A concert and a banquet were hosted Tuesday evening in Beijing by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Swedish Embassy in China to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Swedish diplomatic ties.
Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo and Deputy Prime Minister Lena Hjelm- Wallen of Sweden attended the activities together with nearly 400 guests from both countries.
Wu said 50 years ago today, Sweden established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, taking the lead among all the western countries.
During the past 50 years, bilateral relations have witnessed continuous progress and cooperation in all fields, he said. Sweden ranks 7th in volume of trade with China in the European Union, and China has become Sweden's second largest trade partner in Asia. China and Sweden share many common interest in safeguarding peace and developing economies, he said, noting there is potential for further cooperation. China is willing to work together with Sweden to contribute to world peace.
Hjelm-Wallen said she is glad to have the opportunity to be in China to celebrate this special day. During the past 50 years, bilateral ties have grown steadily. She expressed her delight over China's great achievements in recent years, and said Sweden is willing to reinforce cooperation with China in all sectors.
