Zhu Rongji Meets International Celebrities for Hi-Tech Fair
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met with scores of international celebrities who are attending the Third Session of the China (Beijing) International High-tech Industries Week 2000.

Zhu extended a warm welcome on behalf of the Chinese government and people to the guests and expressed thanks to those who have conducted long-term cooperation and exchanges in economic and technological areas.

The premier said that in the 21st century the continual development of hi-technology will have an enormous and far- reaching impact on the world. "China's development cannot be separated from the rest of the world, and the prosperity of the world needs China," he said. "China will hold an international hi- tech industries week in the capital in May each year."

He said that China hopes financiers, entrepreneurs from around the world will come to invest in China, and make joint efforts with China for the development of global high and new technological industries and economic prosperity.

Director-general of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Carlos Alfredo Magarinos and former President of Argentina Carlos Saul Menem, together with more than 60 international celebrities, were present at the meeting.

Jia Qinglin, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng and Beijing Mayor Liu Qi were also present at the meeting.
