UN Conference Seeks to Reverse Brain-drain in Developing Countries

The 6th International TOKTEN ( Transfer of Knowledge Through Expatriate Nationals) Conference, jointly organized by the Chinese government and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), opened May 8 as part of the ongoing Beijing Hi-Tech Week.

Scholars and officials from 13 participating countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America will examine international migration trends, and how TOKTEN, a volunteer program supported by UNDP and UN volunteers, can help counter the negative effects of brain-drains in developing countries.

Since its implementation in China in 1980, TOKTEN has helped to bring nearly 2,000 overseas Chinese back to the motherland on short-term consultant assignments in the fields of agriculture, education, economics, and science and technology.
