NPC Group Inspects Township Enterprise Law Implementation

A group of lawmakers from the National People's Congress (NPC) Tuesday began a week-long

inspection of the implementation of the law on township enterprises in the east China province of Jiangxi.

The group is headed by Yang Zhenhuai, member of the NPC Standing Committee and vice-chairman of the NPC committee of agriculture and rural affairs.

This is the first time the NPC Standing Committee has made an inspection of the law's implementation since the legislation took effect on January 1, 1997.

Deputy governor Sun Yonghe of Jiangxi this morning briefed the group on the law's implementation in the province and made some suggestions for revising the law.

Along with Jiangxi, the group will also visit the east China province of Zhejiang for further inspections.

By the end of last year, China had about 20.71 million township enterprises employing over 127 million people, and they accounted for nearly one-third of the country's total gross domestic production for 1999.
