US Hegemonism and Power Politics Slammed
Some Chinese scholars Tuesday condemned the US-led NATO's barbaric acts of violating the international law and the UN Charter and US moves to pursue hegemonism and power politics.
They made the condemnation at a gathering held by the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, marking the first anniversary of the US-led NATO's bombing of Chinese embassy in Belgrade and commemorating the martyrs who died in the attack. Participants agreed that the bombing, resulting in the death of three Chinese journalists, injuring more than 20 diplomats and journalists, and damaging the Chinese embassy, is an extremely serious and unlawful act, which grossly violated China's sovereignty and greatly hurt the feelings of Chinese people. The US again provided an explanation of the events on April 8, this year, stating as they did last June that eight employees from the Central Intelligence Agency would be punished. The scholars urged the U.S. government to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the incident and give the Chinese government and people a satisfactory explanation.
Hua Junduo, acting president of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, said that NATO's invasion of Yugoslavia violated the UN Charter and international law, creating an extremely dangerous precedent of armed interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
Hua said that the facts show that neo-interventionism under the pretext of "human rights above sovereignty" can not resolve the human rights issue at all, but merely complicates the situation. He said that basic principles set forth in the UN Charter such as equality in sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries are of realistic significance.
Ethnic problem in a country should be properly solved by its government and people through correct policies, and should not be used as an excuse for outside interference, he added.
