China, India to Lead Asian Internet Boom: Study

Mainland China and India will power the expansion of the Internet in Asia over the next four years, according to a new study by the US investment bank.

The study, obtained by Singapore's The Business Times, found the market capitalization of Asian Internet companies could multiply tenfold over the period.

But despite rapid growth in both usage and e-commerce revenues, Asia will remain at least four years behind the United States in both these aspects, and especially in business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce.

The report, titled Asian Internet Primer, cites projections by the IT consulting firm International Data Corporation (IDC) pointing out that the number of Internet users in Asia will soar from 33 million this year to 95 million by 2004.

The IDC estimates indicate that the top three countries in terms of Internet users by 2004 will be mainland China (33 million users), India (17 million) and Korea (10 million). These three plus Australia will account for two-thirds of Internet users in all of Asia.
