HK's Annual Handling Capacity Exceeds 16 Million ContainersHong Kong Port and Shipping Bureau recently announced that Hong Kong's handling capacity of containers exceeded 16.2 million standard containers in 1999, renewing Hong Kong's status as the world's first busiest container port.According to the head of Hong Kong Port and Shipping Bureau, the container handling capacity of Hong Kong Port registered a rise of 11.2 percent, or an increase of 1.6 million containers last year, thus restoring Hong Kong's status as the world's first busiest container port. Recently, Hong Kong was cited as Asia's best port at the 13th Asian Freight Service Prize. To enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong's container handling capacity, relevant departments have adopted a host of measures, such as improving cross-border traffic and making things convenient for container transportation. With regard to the development of port facilities, Hong Kong completed a harbor specialized in inland river cargo transport late last year. Another main port facility of Hong Kong is the establishment of No.9 container port, which occupies an area of 70 hectares and has six berths. The designed handling capacity is at least 2.6 million standard containers a year and the project is expected to be finished in 2004. |
