Nature Reserve to Protect Siberian Tiger, Sargent JuniperNortheast China's Jilin Province has established the Huangnihe Nature Reserve mainly to protect Siberian tigers and sargent junipers.The reserve, with a total area of 23,476 hectares, abounds in endangered species, such as Siberian tigers, sable otters, mergansers, and plant life including ginseng, sargent junipers, and also Indian azaleas, all under top-level state protection, said Zhang Lufeng, deputy-director of the provincial forestry administrative bureau. The green coverage in the reserve reaches 96.4 percent. Many polar plants are also in the 500-hectare sargent juniper belt. To date, six wild Siberian tigers have been discovered in the Changbai Mountains in the province. The province now has 11 nature reserves, with the areas totaling 1.94 million hectares, Zhang said. |
