Former U.S. President Urges Approval of PNTR with ChinaFormer U.S. President George Bush Sunday expressed his support for a legislation to grant permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) status to China.Talking to reporters at home in Austin, Texas, Bush said trade with China is one of the most important foreign policy issues facing the United States, pointing out that "we have to work diplomatically with China, and not through bashing." "It's not special," Bush said. "It's a normal trade status we give to other countries." The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on a bill to grant PNTR to China in the week of May 22. The Senate is expected to follow suit in June. The Clinton administration, Republican leaders and business groups have been lobbying intensely for support of PNTR with China.
