HK to Set up Women's CommissionThe Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government is breaking new ground in promoting the well-being and interests of women by establishing a Women's Commission, Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan said in Hong Kong Saturday.The commission would address women's needs and take a broad overview of women issues that impinge on a wide range of policy areas, Chan said in a speech delivered Saturday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing. She said the commission will advise the government on a long- term vision and strategy related to the development of women and on policies and initiatives which are of concern to women. "In its formative years, we envisage that the commission will focus on a number of areas that have already been identified as priorities for attention," she said. The priorities include the provision of health services, child support, protection of women against violence, promotion of a working environment friendly to women and various legal issues relating to women and the family. The commission would also arouse community concern over women matters and help eliminate long-standing stereotypes and prejudices through public dialogue and debate, she said. By setting up the Women's Commission, the government could ensure that women's concerns are taken into account as a matter of course when policies and initiatives are being formulated, said Chan. |
