Commercial Center Coaxes Holiday Shoppers

China's seven-day Labor Day holiday has not only coaxed tourists to the country's prime scenic spots, it has also tempted many travelers with the pleasures of shopping in Shanghai.

Nanjing Road, a commercial center in the east China municipality with boutiques and department stores lining both sides of the street, has seen an endless flow of customers.

A shopper surnamed Zhao, together with his wife and daughter, had originally planned to stop briefly in Shanghai on their way to Putuo Mountain in east China's Zhejiang Province. But one look at the bustling shops prompted them to stay overnight to take advantage of all the sales.

"The last time I came to Shanghai was in 1992, and great changes have taken place in the city in the past eight years. There are more quality and brand products and the service here has improved a lot," Zhao said.

Isetan, Parkson, Pacific, and Hualian shopping plazas on anther commercial street, Huaihai Road, have experienced 25 percent increases in trade volume in the first three days of the holiday, according to store officials.

To make the biggest profits possible during the week-long holiday, many Shanghai department stores have cooperated with travel agencies to create TV and newspaper advertising that would attract more people to the city.
