China Applies to Host 50th World Advertiser's Conference

Advertising is still a young business in China. But, it has developed so quickly in less than twenty years that it is moving closer to international standards. And, some ambitious Chinese advertisers have proposed that China be the site of a World Federation of Advertisers' conference in the year 2003.

The announcement came from the Chinese Association of Enterprises, which said that a conference like this would help Chinese advertisers understand their obligations better.

Chen Zhong from Chinese Enterprises Association May 6 said: "Chinese advertisements should meet international standards. If China enters the WTO, Chinese advertisers will face fiercer competition and will have to play by international rules."

Chen Zhong has predicted that Chinese advertising agencies could become some of the best in the world by the year 2003, but has also emphasised that there should be policies to regulate the business.

The World Federation of Advertisers was founded in 1953. It is the only world-wide body to represent advertising agencies in everything connected with marketing and communications.

The WFA comprises 44 national associations on all continents and represents 370 billion US dollars worth of annual advertising, or roughly 85 per cent of the world's total media advertising. China became a member in October last year. A conference of the Federation is held every two years.
