Business Expansion on Tap for J&J ChinaJohnson and Johnson (J&J), the international manufacturer of health care products, will turn its production centre here in Xi'an into a major global distribution centre for medical products.Xi'an-Janssen Pharmaceutical Ltd will expand its investment in developing new products, Jerry R Norskog, president of J&J China Development said. Norskog, however, did not reveal any details. J&J was still working on a plan for the project, Norskog said. Last year, J&J increased spending by about 100 million yuan (US$12 million) in the Xi'an project. "We will carry out the plan step by step," said Norskog. "It (Xi'an-Janssen) is one of the highest qualified medical manufacturers in the world," said Norskog, who served as the president of Xi'an-Janssen from 1992 to 1996. Xi'an-Janssen was selected one of the 10 most admired joint-venture companies in China last year by the Chinese edition of Fortune magazine. The company is also the second largest among J&J's 180 companies worldwide. "We aim to make Xi'an-Janssen a monster by introducing new J&J products to it," said Norskog. Norskog who has spent 26 years in J&J, said a rich history and high-tech talents make Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, a suitable home for world-class companies. Foreign-funded companies have also benefited from Xi'an's lower labour costs. Local governments have also offered much help to foreign firms to develop their business in the ancient Chinese city. "Government officials in Xi'an and Shaanxi Province have rolled up their sleeves to help us by giving us valuable suggestions and facilitating the establishment of our distribution network," Norskog said.
