Beijing Gathering Commemorates Late American Writer

The China Society for People's Friendship Studies held a gathering Friday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the passing away of Agnes Smedley, an American writer and social activist.

Smedley first came to China in 1929 as a journalist, and spent a total of 13 years in the country, during which she devoted herself to China's revolutionary struggle and national liberation, gaining the respect of the Chinese people.

Ling Qing, vice-president of the China Society for People's Friendship Studies, called for learning from Smedley in terms of promoting mutual understanding and friendship between peoples around the world.
