International Charity Conference Held in HK

Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee-hwa Thursday unveiled an international charity conference "United Way International World Assembly 2000" at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

The assembly, with the theme "Building Community Through Social Responsibility", brings together leaders from corporations, foundations, international non-governmental organizations throughout the world to learn about the latest advances in how the business, government and non-government sectors work together to build sustainable communities.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Arthur P. Bellis, Chairman of United Way International's (UWI) Board of Directors, said:" We are delighted to bring the UWI Assembly to Hong Kong this year, allowing our global affiliates to the opportunities to learn from Hong Kong's long tradition of caring for those in need."

The assembly, organized by the United Way International and co- hosted by the Community Chest of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, will be held from May 4 to 6.

UWI was established in 1974 to promote and develop the concept of community-wide fund-raising appeals. Headquartered in Virginia, USA, the organization now has affiliates in 35 countries and regions, including the Community Chest and China Charity Foundation in China.
