Japanese Police Arrest Bus Hijacker

Japanese police stormed a hijacked bus near Hiroshima early Thursday to end a 15-hour standoff with a teenager who killed one woman and held a six-year-old girl at knifepoint.

At least four others were injured during the hijacking. Ten hostages, including the girl were rescued unharmed.

Police said the 17-year-old hijacker had admitted to the hijacking but gave no motive.

Media reports said he had been released earlier Wednesday from a mental hospital to spend the Golden Week holiday with his family.

The hijacking began Wednesday afternoon, about 40 minutes after the inter-city bus pulled out of the southwestern town of Saga. During the police chase, two passengers jumped from the bus and suffered injuries.
