China Develops Economical Fingerprint Identification System

Chinese scientists say they have developed the world's most economical fingerprint identification system.

The new system, just half the size of a business card, was created by scientists in a high-tech development zone in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province.

According to chief developer Qiu Boyun, the new system can memorize up to 3,500 fingerprints and costs less than 500 yuan ( about 60.2 US dollars).

A traditional fingerprint recognition system costs at least 6, 000 yuan (about 722.8 dollars) as it heavily depends on advanced computer technology, he said.

He said he and his colleagues will soon present an even smaller fingerprint recognition system, which is on a card the size of a stamp and can search 1,000 fingerprints per second.

The system can be widely used in security systems, including those in computers, car and door locks, and electronic commerce systems.

Zhongzheng Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd., is now producing the system in small batches.
