Others Blamed at Start of Lockerbie Trial

The two Libyan defendants in the Pan-Am Lockerbie bombing trial have pleaded not guilty, and their lawyers have claimed two Palestinian groups are responsible for the terrorist act.

A defense statement pointed to 10 other alleged conspirators who belong to two Palestinian groups. However, one of the two groups has immediately denied the allegation.

The long-awaited trial opened in the small Dutch town of Camp Zeist Wednesday, under Scottish legal procedure. Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi and Lamen Khalifa Fahima, both from Libya, are charged with murder, conspiracy to murder and breaching the international aircraft safety act.

Pan Am Flight 103 exploded in mid-air over Lockerbie, Scotland on its way to New York in December, 1988. 259 people on board and 11 others on the ground were killed.
