British, Japanese PMs Discuss G-8 AgendaBritish Prime Minister Tony Blair on Wednesday agreed with his Japanese counterpart Yoshiro Mori that the forthcoming summit of the world's advanced industrial nations in Japan would focus on new economy and information technology.Blair and Mori "discussed the G-8 meeting agenda and agreed to give priority to the new economy and challenging of bridging the digital divide in society," a Downing Street spokesman told Xinhua. "The two leaders also discussed Russian President Vladimir Putin's election and agreed on the importance of supporting Russia through its process of economic transition," the spokesman said. He said Blair and Mori held a friendly and informal discussion lasting 75 minutes. Mori, who only took office last month, arrived in London on Wednesday from Germany on a whirlwind tour of G-8 members before hosting the group summit, which is scheduled to be held in Okinawa in July. The G8 comprises the world's seven leading industrial nations - Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and Russia. Mori left London on Wednesday evening, shortly after his meeting with Blair. He is due to meet Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien on Thursday morning before wrapping up the tour with a meeting with US President Bill Clinton in Washington. |
