Peace with Israel Still Possible

Syrian Foreign Minister Faruk Shareh said Wednesday that there was still chance of establishing peace with Israel.

"Contacts in this regard did not stop," he told reporters after meeting with visiting Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, according to the Arab-Syrian News Agency.

"Syria clearly supports efforts to establish fair and comprehensive peace," Shareh said, adding that "at least all Arabs know that Israel was the party that plants obstacles on the road to peace."

Syria and Lebanon offer joint proposals for fair and comprehensive peace with Israel under the references of the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference and the relevant United Nations resolutions. "I made this statement weeks ago, but Israel has not responded so far," he added.

"This Syrian position is clear to everybody," he stressed. Syria demands that Israel return in full the Golan Heights it captured in 1967 from Syria.

The Syrian top diplomat urged the United States to take a fair and unbiased stance toward the Arab-Israeli peace process.

The Syrian-Israeli peace talks were resumed in Washington last December after a four-year freeze, but hit a snag in January due to Israel's refusal to pledge a total withdrawal from the Golan to the borders of June 4, 1967.
