Vice-President Urges Good Environment for YoungstersChinese Vice-President Hu Jintao sat in on a number of community youth activities in Beijing on May 3 and later stressed that young people need to grow up in a good environment.Hu visited a community in Hepingjie Street of Beijing's Chaoyang District, enjoying a choral performance and talking with teenager surfers of the Internet. He was accompanied by Jia Qinglin, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC), and Zhou Qiang, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC). The CYLC has designated the area as a national model community for its outstanding work with young people. Commenting on an artistic performance staged by youngsters, Hu said cultural activities in urban communities should be more diversified. While visiting the Youth Service Center of the community, the vice-president praised the young people for volunteering to help the elderly and handicapped, saying more teenagers should become involved in such activities. Hu also asked questions about the community's work to protect the rights and interests of the young people. He said special attention should be paid to the creation of a healthy and safe environment for children. In an Internet cafe, Hu talked with teenage users of the Internet, who enjoy free access to the Internet service. Hu said he was delighted that the Internet is becoming an important part of the young people's life, but stressed the prevention of negative effects of the Internet on young people. Hu, who is also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, emphasized that urban communities should play a key role in serving residents, satisfying the people's demands for better material and cultural life, and maintaining social stability. He asked the CYLC organizations to come to the aid of students, young workers and those laid off from the state enterprises.
