HK to Attend U.N. Hearing on Convention Against Torture

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government will send a team to attend a hearing to be held by the United Nations Committee Against Torture in Geneva on May 4 and 5.

"The six-member team will attend the hearing as part of China's delegation. During the hearing, the Committee will examine China's report which incorporates the report on the HKSAR. The team will answer questions raised by the Committee on the implementation of the Convention Against Torture in the HKSAR," a government spokesman said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the HKSAR government has submitted an updating report on relevant developments since September 30, 1998, the cut-off day for the HKSAR report, which was submitted to the committee in May last year as part of China's third report under the Convention.

The team, led by Stephen Wong, deputy solicitor general, will leave for Geneva Tuesday.
