Murderers of Prosecutor Sentenced to Death in Hainan

Four convicted murderers who conspired to kill a prosecutor in retaliation for putting them in prison, were given death sentences over the weekend by the Intermediate Court of Haikou, in this capital of southernmost China's island province of Hainan.

The victim, Huang Chonghua, was a prosecutor with the Hainan Procuratorate, who handled a 1998 bribery case involving a local tax official, Meng Wenteng.

Meng harbored a grudge against Huang, and hired hitmen to murder Huang on March 16 last year.

The suspects were soon apprehended one after another, while Meng remained at large. He was eventually arrested last November in neighboring Guangdong Province.

Meng and the three hitmen, Shi Zesheng, Pu Anjun and Wang Zhenhua, were sentenced to death, according to the court verdict.
