China's 1st-Quarter Customs Revenue Up 27.4 Percent

The amount of tariff and duties levied on imports in the first quarter of this year reached 46.67 billion yuan (5.64 billion U.S. dollars), a rise of 27.4 percent over the same period of last year.

An official with the General Administration of Customs attributed the record customs revenue to increased taxation measures and crackdowns on smuggling.

In the January-March period, the customs nationwide handled 4, 376 smuggling cases, up 34 percent from a year earlier, and involving 887 million yuan (107 million dollars).
