China Educates Citizens Against Household Fires

Beijing has launched a campaign to educate local residents against possible household fires at its largest Fangzhuang Residential Zone.

This marks the beginning of a nationwide campaign called " Keeping Households Away From Fires".

Statistics show that in 1999 alone, there were 22,000 fires broke out at urban residential buildings, killing 673 and injured 945 people, and leaving damage bill costing 110 million yuan (13. 25 million US dollars).

China's fire-fighting departments said that people lack a basic awareness of fire-prevention and have little or no idea about how to extinguish fires or escape from them.

The Ministry of Public Security, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, All-China Women's Federation and the People's Insurance Company of China have combined their efforts to a nationwide campaign to publicize fire prevention all over the country.
