Ecuadorians March Against Dollarization

Thousands of workers, teachers, peasants, Indians, students and other Ecuadorian citizens grouped in social organizations returned Monday, International Labor Day, to the streets of the diverse cities of the country in order to reject dollarization and the increase of prices of basic products.

Demonstrators want, besides a salary increase, amnesty for civilians and military personnel who participated in the coup riot of last January and reject U.S. presence at Manta air base on Ecuador's Pacific coast.

Protests are being held in Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca, among other cities.

Heads of social and syndicate organizations said the marches are peaceful, but stressed anything can happen when the people are dying of hunger.
