Learning from Model Workers Stressed

Wei Jianxing, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Sunday stressed the importance of learning from model workers and advanced personnel.

At a symposium in Beijing to mark the International Labor Day on May 1, Wei, also president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, noted that the nearly 3,000 individuals cited in Beijing Saturday are the outstanding representatives of the Chinese working class.

Their thinking and behavior embodies the noble character and morals of the Chinese working class. They are indeed the nation's elite, the country's backbone, and the example for the people, he said.

The nation should learn from these people, foster lofty ideals and spirit of selflessness in work, and arm themselves with advanced thinking and modern science and technology, Wei said.

According to Wei, China's modernization drive has entered into a crucial historic period and this calls for whole-hearted reliance on the working class and efforts to maintain the interests of the laboring people.

Wei said that as a non-governmental organization under the leadership of the Party, the country's trade union is the link and bridge between the government and the masses. It is imperative to give full play to the role of trade unions at various levels.

Wei stressed that the trade unions should fully recognize the importance of the Party's policy of reliance on the working class, rally as many as workers around them and protect the legitimate rights and interests of the workers.

In the meantime, the trade unions should increase efforts to protect and arouse the workers' enthusiasm and channel it into the country's reforms and development and the maintenance of social stability, Wei said.
