China Developing MPEG Technology

Expert says that China is busy developing multimedia access technology by participating in the drafting of international standards of moving pictures (MPEG).

Multimedia access technology is the most important part of digital home electronic appliances, according to Professor Gao Wen, leader of the research group of intelligent computers under the " State 863 Program".

MPEG-1 is a recognized standard for compression videos, while MPEG-2 is a broadcast-quality standard that provides better resolution for DVD movies than VHS tapes, Gao said.

He said that China now has to pay about 20 US dollars for each home-grown DVD player to foreign MPEG technology providers.

If China can make a breakthrough in this technology, several hundreds of million dollars would be saved and China will be able to maintain its competitive edge in the multimedia technology market.

The 53rd MPEG meeting will be held in Beijing from July 17 to 21.
