Chinese Ambassador Becomes Security Council President for MayWang Yingfan, Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, succeeded Robert Fowler, Canadian ambassador to the United Nations, as the president of the U.N. Security Council as of May 1.This is the first time for Ambassador Wang to take over as the president of the 15-member Security Council since he became the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations in February. The Council presidency changes monthly according to the principle of alphabetical rotation among the 15 members, including the five permanent members. Under the U.N. Charter, the Security council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of peace and security in the world at large.
