Xiamen City Reports High Growth in Foreign Trade

Xiamen, a booming city in east China' s Fujian Province and one of the country's special economic zones, generated more than 2.14 billion U.S. dollars in foreign trade for the first quarter of this year, up 32.3 percent from the same period last year.

The volume included 1.279 billion U.S. dollars in exports, a surge of 50.4 percent, and 864 million U.S. dollars in imports, an increase of 12.3 percent.

Sales of Xiamen commodities in all major overseas markets, such as Asia, North America, and Europe, have increased.

Local experts said the growth is due to both exports by overseas-funded enterprises in the city and mechanical and electrical equipment exports.

Exports by overseas-funded businesses in Xiamen reached 794 million U.S. dollars during the first three months of the year, a year-on-year rise of 61.5 percent.

Mechanical and electrical equipment exports surged a year-on- year 82.9 percent to top 530 million U.S. dollars.

Nationwide, China's foreign trade in the first quarter of this year surpassed 98.2 billion U.S. dollars, representing a 40- percent growth from last year.

Exports in the first three months hit 51.7 billion dollars, up 39 percent, while imports reached 46.5 billion dollars,up 41 percent.
