President Jiang's Visit to Turkey Fruitful: Chinese Ambassador

Chinese Ambassador to Ankara Yao Kuangyi has said Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Turkey is an important step for comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

Yao made the remarks during an interview with Mehmet Guler, the General Director of the semi-official Anatolia News Agency and other senior editors as well.

The most important achievement of Jiang's visit to Turkey between April 18-21 was that "the two heads of state had put forward their political determination to further improve friendly relations between the two countries," Yao said.

The ambassador expected that Turkey and China will set up closer relations within framework of principles of mutual respect, security, equality and joint development through this fruitful visit.

He highlighted the two important documents signed during the visit concerning the energy cooperation and Joint Economic Commission meeting's protocol, which was aimed at increasing the bilateral trade volume which currently stands at 800 million U.S. dollars.

Yao recognized that there is a serious imbalance against Turkey in the trade volume with China, saying that China is ready to take all necessary measures to change this condition.

He said that both countries have agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields of railways and energy, adding that China is ready to assist Turkey in construction of hydroelectric power plants.

The ambassador said that frequent exchanges between the two countries in the fields of culture and sports will be another achievement of President Jiang's visit to Turkey.

He expressed wishes that China and Turkey, the two biggest countries in the eastern and western sides of Asia, should further develop cooperations in all fields through Jiang's signigicant visit to Turkey.
