KMT Members Demand Lee be Kicked outThe recent remarks by Lee Teng-hui about his Kuomintang (KMT) Party have continued to fuel the indignation of KTM members at all levels, so much so that they want him to be kicked out of the party.Lee, forced to step down from the top post of the KMT, recently launched another verbal attack against the party, saying that it is an "outsider" with an old-fashioned name that should be changed. Many senior KMT members, including those from the KMT Central Standing Committee, have strongly condemned Lee's remarks. They pointed out that Lee has been more in favor of "Taiwan independence" than the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and that if the KMT hopes to be reformed, the "evil legacy" of Lee must be thoroughly erased. Some senior KMT members noted that in his capacity as head of the KMT, Lee had shattered party unity and achieved his goal of giving the island's power to the DPP. Wu Poh Hsiung, a member of the KMT Central Standing Committee, also pointed out that the reform of KMT should focus on its content rather than its name. A large number of KMT members at the grassroots level said that during his 12-year rule, Lee tried repeatedly to undermine the party. Now, Lee clearly wants to wipe out the party permanently by changing its name, they pointed out. KMT branches overseas, including some based in the US and Canada, have also begun to call for Lee's expulsion from the party. |
