Qinghai Launches Afforestation CampaignNorthwest China's Qinghai Province is vigorously pushing ahead a ten-year afforestation program. The move is to increase forest coverage in Qinghai by four percent, said a local forestry official.Under the program, 23 million mu (1.53 million hectares) of hinterland in the province is expected to be reforested with trees and grass, the official said. Qinghai has a total area of 720,000 square kilometers. Forest area of the province is 29.7 million mu (1.98 million hectares), ranking last in the country. The province has launched a series of ecological projects over the past ten years, completing 14 million mu (933,000 hectares) of afforestation areas. These projects have played a major role in helping the province improve its ecology, turn farmland into forests and curb soil erosion, he added.
