Laws Should Be Improved for New Situation: Li Peng

China's top lawmaker has urged revision and reinterpretation of existing laws in order to meet the requirements of the new situation in the country.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remark today at the closing of the 15th session of the NPC Standing Committee.

Many of the existing laws were stipulated with a special historic background as China has been transforming from a planned economy to a market economy, Li said, noting that some of these laws are not appropriate now, and some are even contrary to reality.

China is developing a socialist market economy and building socialism with its own characteristics, which is a great cause never before undertaken, he said.

The top legislator supported the government's efforts to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO), calling it necessary for deepening the country's reform, expanding the opening-up, and building a socialist market economy, as for the country prepares to participate in the great trend of economic globalization.

China should adhere to its principles for joining the WTO in order to benefit the country's reform and opening drive, safeguard economic security, and promote the development of economic and trade relations with foreign countries.

Speaking of the removal of Cheng Kejie as a vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, Li called it a full indication of the CPC Central Committee's determination to strictly control the Party, govern the nation by law, and severely punish corruption.
