Chinese Vice-Premier on Agricultural Development

Chinese Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao said Friday that China must adapt itself to the demands of new developments in agriculture and the rural economy, and promote comprehensive agricultural development.

Addressing the third session of the joint meeting for national agricultural comprehensive development, Wen called for enhancing agricultural infrastructure construction, improving farm production conditions, and improving overall agricultural production.

He urged the rural areas to create high-quality farmlands and to enhance water conservancy projects, adding that comprehensive development is the state's strategy for supporting and protecting agriculture.

Farmers should readjustment modes of production according to market demands, he stressed.

Preferential policies should be given to transregional enterprises engaged in farm produce processing and sales, he said. Wen called for the promotion of scientific and technological progress in agriculture and greater investment in agricultural high technology and training.

On ecological construction, he said that this year several areas, including Beijing, were hit by sand and dust storms, which affected economic development and people's lives.

Anti-desertification and the improvement of the ecological environment are urgent tasks facing the country, he said. Wen also called for the enhancement of project management and improved management standards for Chinese agricultural.
