HK, Mainland IT Experts Discuss Business Opportunities

Some 400 experts from Hong Kong and China's mainland gathered Friday to discuss the status quo and direction of information technology (IT) industry, which has topped the development agenda of both sides.

The two-day forum, with the theme "Prospects and Business Opportunities for Cooperation Between the Mainland and Hong Kong," places emphasis on the outlook and business opportunities of the information technology in Hong Kong and the mainland after China joins the World Trade Organization (WTO).

"Currently, information industry has become the powerhouse for the world economy and both developed countries and developing countries are defining it as their cross-century strategic task to step up information technology development, " Hu Qili, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said in a letter read by his representative to the forum.

The forum offers a good opportunity for Hong Kong and the mainland to strengthen cooperation and exchange in the information sector, said Hu, who is also President of the Chinese Institute of Electronics.

Attending the forum are famous scholars and experts in Hong Kong and the mainland, as well as officials in charge of information and technology industry on the two sides. Topics discussed at the forum include Hong Kong and the mainland's information technology development, information industry prospect after China joining the WTO, and information industry in China's mainland and Hong Kong: complementary aspects and business opportunities.

Speakers at the forum believed Hong Kong and the mainland, since each economy has its edge over the other, have huge potential to tap in information technology field after China's accession to the WTO.
