Li Lanqing Praises Health Education Campaign for Farmers

Vice-Premier Li Lanqing sent a letter Friday to a national teleconference on health education for farmers, urging local governments at various levels to fully understand the importance of this effort.

Farmers, especially those living in poor and remote areas, still lack basic medical knowledge and live an outdated, unhealthy life-style and he urged that more medical knowledge be made available to them.

Farmers should be guided to advocate science and eliminate superstition, develop a scientific and civilized life-style, and consistently enhance their level of health, he noted.

The nationwide campaign, known as "National Health Education Action for 900 Million Farmers," was launched in 1994 by the National Committee for the Patriotic Public Health Campaign, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the then Ministry of Radio, Film, and Television.

Since then, publicity activities of various kinds, including TV broadcasts, posters, seminars, and exhibitions, have been conducted throughout the country to increase farmers' awareness of health and medicine.

At today's teleconference, a new leading group composed of officials from the four old sponsors and three new sponsors including the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the All-China Women's Federation, and the Aid- the-Poor Office of the State Council participated.
