People Daily Calls for Learning from Model Workers

China's leading newspaper the " People's Daily" will publish an editorial April 29, calling for the whole nation to learn from its model workers and highly-skilled personnel.

In the running-up to the International Labor Day on May 1, the national conference of commending the model workers and highly- skilled personnel will be held in Beijing on April 29.

"We extend our warm congratulations at the opening of the conference to the model workers and highly-skilled personnel who have made outstanding contributions to reform and socialist modernization," the editorial said.

May 1st is the a holiday for working people on the globe. The conference, held before the date, is to further promote the glorious and great spirit of the working class, it said.

Model workers are the outstanding representatives of the working people in China. They represent the fundamental interests of the general public.

"The spirits of model workers should be greatly promoted throughout the country," the editorial stressed.

A social environment should be fostered in the country where model workers are greatly respected, and their deeds emulated and admired, it said.

The editorial notes that working people shoulder new tasks as China's reforms enter a crucial stage of development.

"The working class constitutes the major force in China's reform, development, stability, and in building a cultural progress," said the editorial, adding that "relying on the working class has been the guiding principle of the party and government.

The editorial also called on the country's working class to actively participate in the reforms of State-owned enterprises.

The success of the reforms within state-run enterprises will bring great benefits to the working class. "We should fully realize our fundamental and long-term interests and work hard at achieving this goal," the editorial noted.

The Party and government organizations at all levels should respect and represent the interests of the working class and should help tackle difficulties faced by laid-off and retired workers.

In the meantime, trade unions across the country should also work hard to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the workers, the editorial stressed.
