Model Workers Tour Great WallChinese model workers, who have come Beijing to attend a Labor Day conference to commend their hard work and efforts, toured the Great Wall today.At about 10:00 Friday morning, delegations of model workers from Guangdong, Gansu, Tibet, Xinjiang and other provinces and autonomous regions arrived at the Dadaling section of the Great Wall. Despite of the gloomy weather, the delegates were very excited to see the magnificent view of the Great Wall. Some of the delegates from China's northwest autonomous region of Xinjiang said that they were given a warm reception since they arrived yesterday. "The Party and the central government have given us great honors. We are determined to do our utmost for the prosperity of the country," a delegate said. The State Council will hold a large conference in Beijing on April 29, where 2,950 model workers will be cited for their contributions to the country. Come Beijing The first group of Chinese model workers to be commended in the running up to the International Labor Day on May 1 arrived in Beijing early April 27 morning. The 130 model workers are from central China's province of Henan. They were followed by 90 model workers from north China's Shanxi Province. Officials from the reception office of the organizing committee of the model workers gathering said that all the model workers will arrive in Beijing by today evening. The State Council will hold a large-scale meeting here on April 29, at which 2,950 model workers will be cited for their contributions to the reform and opening-up and socialist modernization drive over the past five years. Of all the model workers, those from enterprises account for 36. 78 percent and peasants for 19 percent, while scientists, engineers and technicians and teachers make up 27.2 percent. The model workers are also scheduled to tour the Great Wall and the Tiananmen Square. They will begin to leave for home on April 30.
