HK Airport Registers Record Passengers, Cargo

Passenger numbers and air cargo tonnage continue to break records at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) in March 2000, according to figures released Thursday by the Airport Authority (AA).

More than 2.6 million passengers passed through HKIA in March, an increase of 8.5 percent over the same month last year. In the 12 months from April 1999 to March 2000, the airport handled more than 30.9 million passengers.

One-day records for the airport were set on Good Friday, April 21 when 121,000 passengers arrived or left on a total of 610 flights, the highest number of flights so far on a single day at HKIA.

Cargo growth regained speed in March, with 195,000 tonnes handled, 24.3 percent more than March 1999. The total cargo tonnage for the last 12 months reached 2.06 million tonnes, a rise of 25.3 percent over the corresponding period in 1998-99.

Cargo exports for March 2000 rose 32.2 percent over the corresponding period last year, and 35.9 percent for the past 12 months.

"The figures for March are very encouraging indeed," AA Chief Executive Officer Billy Lam Chung-lun said. "If these trends continue, then 2000 is set to be a record year for both passengers and cargo."
