Taiwan New Leaders Urged to Give Up Separatist StanceThe newly-elected leaders of Taiwan have been urged to recognize that there is only one China in the world and give up their separatist stance of promoting " Taiwan independence".Zhu Xun, chairman of the Subcommittee for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Compatriots and Overseas Chinese of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the call in his closing speech here today to the "Anti-Taiwan Independence and Promoting China's Reunification Symposium." At present, relations between the two sides on the Taiwan Straits have reached a crucial stage, the CPPCC leader said in his speech. How relations evolve, towards peace or to war, depends entirely on whether the Taiwan authorities will maintain the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and the happiness of people on both sides of the Straits, Zhu said. The CPPCC leader noted that the mainland has taken note of the seemingly good gestures from new leaders of Taiwan on some minor issues of the cross-Straits relations. However, "we also note the fact that the new leaders of Taiwan have showed no sign of change on whether they recognize the principle there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China," Zhu said. It is known to all that the one China principle represents the basis and prerequisite of the development of cross-Straits relations. The principle also forms the basis and prerequisite of the peace and reunification of China, Zhu said. To have equal dialogues and negotiations based on the one China principle constitutes the only way for the realization of peace and reunification between the two sides of the Straits, Zhu stressed. Zhu noted that the change of leaders in Taiwan does not mean that Taiwan has become independent or that the hostile status between the two sides on the Taiwan Straits has come to an end. The most important thing for the time being is that the Taiwan authorities must accept the one China principle and recognize Taiwan as part of China. "Only in this way can the cross-Straits relations be improved and the Taiwan Straits enjoy peace," the CPPCC leader stressed. The CPPCC leader called on all Chinese on the mainland, Taiwan as well as overseas to unite in their efforts to oppose "Taiwan independence" and strive for the growth of cross-Straits ties and the early realization of peaceful reunification. For the past 5,000 years, national unity has been the mainstream of the Chinese history. "This is an inevitable historic trend that no individuals and forces can alter," Zhu said. The CPPCC leader expressed the belief that with the efforts of people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits and the Chinese in other parts of the world, the Chinese nation will surely achieve its goal of national reunification. |
