E-Commerce will Bring Revolution to China's Tourism Market

E-commerce is bound to bring a revolution to China's tourism sector, said a Chinese tourism official.

Wei Xiao'an, director of the Planning and Finance Department of the National Tourism Administration (NTA), said tourism e-commerce companies, with their low cost, wide coverage, and direct sales, will take an increasingly large market share from traditional tour companies.

Wei's remarks were supported by the recently closed China Scenic Spot and Resort Exhibition in this northeast China's port city, which was invigorated by various promotional activities launched by a number of e-commerce companies, drawing the attention of both visitors and professional tourism personnel. China now has more than 300 professional tourism websites. However, tourism-related e-commerce in China is still in the preliminary stage, and these companies must improve in line with market changes, Wei said, adding that they should also cooperate with foreign counterparts.

At a recent National Work Conference on Tourism Management, NTA Director He Guangwei said that China will build a nationwide website on tourism management linking NTA with all local tourism management departments, and will choose strong partners to launch a state-level tourism e-commerce website.
