Expo Highlights IT SectorCOMDEX/China 2000, the most influential exhibition for information technology (IT) products and services, opened at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing Wednesday.The exhibition, which will continue through April 29, is organized by Ministry of Information Industry (MII), Ministry of Science and Technology and China Council for the Promotion and International Trade as well as their foreign partners Ziff-Davis and IDG. "The total sales volume of IT products reached 430 billion yuan (US$51.93 billion) last year, increasing 27.7 per cent over the previous year, while the profit was more than 33 billion yuan (US$3.99 billion) for the industry,'' revealed Chen Chong, deputy director of the electronic and information products management department with MII. China invested 160 billion yuan (US$19.32 billion) in the infrastructure of the IT industry last year, Chen said. The four-day exhibition is a convergence of the 4th international computer show and the 21st China computer products trade fair. The show targets industry insiders, including government departments, IT products agents, manufacturers and developers. It aims to promote the development of domestic IT industry and exchange with foreign partners. More than 200 IT companies are displaying their most advanced techniques and ideas as well as new products and solutions for the Internet age. Foreign companies include Samsung, Sharp, Fujitsu and GSL. The domestic big names are Legend, Stone, Great Wall and Haier. About 60 speeches and technical discussions will be held during the exhibition. Senior officials from Legend, Haier, and National Semiconductor of US will reveal their development strategies for the surging Internet industry. The development of Linux, a free operation system, will be another focus of COMDEX/China 2000. Leading domestic Linux developers will hold a two-day-forum on business opportunities in China. |
